I sat at the dinner table
Dad asked me what I had done this day after school
I leaned forward toward my green beans and searched for the answer

The lie

“I went to the shoe store to buy a new pair of shoes but they didn't have my size,” I say

Mom thought I was telling the truth as I was a bit late coming home and she had given me money for shoes last week

The truth

I got laid today after school
In my own bed
And bled
Virgin that I was
I quickly washed and dried the sheets and straightened out my room

Then I fled
Left the house before my parents got home from work
I walked around the block for many minutes
Contemplated my misdemeanor

I held onto this lie for a lifetime
I had to
But in reality, the misdeed felt grand…
